Why Do Employers Have A Delay Period Before Medical Insurance Benefits Are Offered? |
I am taking a new job. Medical benefits will not be active until I am employed 90 days. Why do employers do this- what is the benefit to them? I really don't want to pay for 3 months of COBRA coverage.
| Answer: Technically, if they don't want to keep you on, they can get rid of you through "employment at will," which means that if you can't do your job up to par, they can let you go without having to pay unemployment on you. You should have a 3 month and a 6 month performance evaluation to get a rough idea of where you stand and if they want to continue investing in you. The majority of employees only stay with a company 1-2 years and usually move on. |
