Do J1 Visa Holders Pay SDI (state Disability Insurance) In San Francisco?
Question by emre şenol | Posted in United States
Hi,
I am a J1 visa holder for a tourism and hospitality internship in San Francisco. My employer suggests that I should sing up for SDI and pay a SDI tax in all my paychecks. Even though I am not going to be able to benefit from it (since I can not get a PFL or claim support for losing job or becoming disabled) do I have to sing up and pay for it?
Besides, according to regulations for J1, I already purchased an insurance which is going to cover me during my internship
Answer: if you do not intend to remain in the US after the internship you can declare that you are exempt from those taxes and they should not withhold the FICA or state disability taxes
income taxes will be withheld however and you will file a tax return(alien resident)

I will be applying for an Internship in the USA so will need to apply for a J1 Visa. I have looked at requirements, but different sites say different things which is very confusing and some of them say I will need to show $50,000 as health insurance??? Is that right??
2)
Also I know some J1 Visas are subject to 2 year Foreign Residency (where you go back home and have to stay there for 2 years before applying again).
Are all J1 Visa holders subject
Answer: The most reliable site to visit for official information on your J visa is :
That's the website of the Department of State (DOS), the official government department responsible for issuing visas.
I was myself a J-1 visa holder many years ago. As I understand it, the Foreign Residency requiremnt only applies to students who have studied and earned and degrees in the US. They would need to return to their home countries on completion of their degrees, wait two years, and then apply for the J-1. But check the DOS website.
