In Aust, What Does Private Health Insurance Cover For Pregnancy/birth? |
I know health funds require certain waiting period before they cover you for pregnancy/birth related services. If you choose the top cover (and meet the waiting period criteria), what do the heath funds actually help cover? Is it only hospital? or do they cover doctor's fees also? Does Medicare cover anything?
| Answer: Medicare covers 85% of the scheduled fee for any doctor, specialist, pathology etc. fees. If you are treated in a private hospital, your private hospital insurance will cover the Gap which is the difference between the Medicare benefit and the scheduled fee of any of the above if the service is performed in hospital. If your doctor etc. charges more than the schedule fee (and most do, though pathologists usually don't charge much over), you must pay the additional amount. Don't forget that there may be doctors other than your GP or obstetrician e.g. perhaps an anesthetist and/or a pediatrician and the same applies to all of them. Your private hospital insurance |
