Am American W/ Visa Living In England, Can I Get National Work Insurance Number?
Question by Manda Bee | Posted in Other - United Kingdom
I'm a student out here in England for a year, and so I have a student visa. However, I want to get a part time job. Can I apply and receive a national insurance number in order to get a job?
Details please, help!
Answer: If you are here legally studying or working, you can obtain a National Insurance number; in fact, you must.
By the way, America is a whole continent. You probably mean U.S.A.; the only country without nationality. I guess you are going to have to come up with something like Unitedestatian, or something like that.
How Does Taxation And National Insurance Work In Canada
Question by pawsons | Posted in Canada
in britain we have national insurance which the government deduct from our salary which goes to pay for things such as our national health service and social security benefits for people out of work or disabled and cant work these payments are compulsory and the government just take them. i wanted to know how these things get paid for in canada, what gets deducted from payslips, who pays for the maintenance of your roads, looking after the unemployed your health service etc. also are the payments
Answer: In Canada, we have the following items deducted from our paychecks:
**Employment Insurance (EI) ~1.75% (depends on the province)
**Canada Pension Plan (CPP) ~4.5%
**Tax: The tax deduction varies depending on how much you have requested your employer to withhold. If you always get a tax refund, then you can request your employer to withhold less tax. If you always have to pay at the end of the year, you can request that your employer withhold more tax so that you don't get a big surprise in April (our tax time)
**Any other employer designated deductions such as meals, uniforms, union dues, etc.

I was wondering, if I had a part time job and worked as an apprenticeship and made £100 a week on each jobs, would I have to pay tax and national insurance because they would be classed as combined income? OR would I have to pay because u can work £110 a week without national insurance and £124.50 without tax a week. I take it I would have to pay both even tho they are different jobs? Confused?
Answer: If your earning works out to be more than your Personal Allowance amount, by adding all your earnings up, it doesn't matter if earnings are from multiple places, more than one jobs etc, you will have to pay tax.
For National Insurance if your earning added all up is more than £5720 a year you will pay National Insurance.
Anything less you wont pay!
(Personal Allowance amount for Under 65 is £6475, 65 - 74 years old is £9490 and over 75 is £9640).
Is Where I Work Illegal? - National Insurance And TAX For A Small Business?
Question by libby.anders | Posted in United Kingdom
I work in a coffee shop where everybody gets paid £5 cash in hand. No TAX is paid and no National Insurance is paid...the boss insists this is legal but i dont think it is. Also can workers get fired without any warning?
Are there are any websites which show this information?
Answer: £5 ph is less than the national minimum wage, so that is unlawful in itself.
On £5 ph you wouldnt be liable to tax and NIC, but you do need to sign a form P46 to confirm this is your only job, otherwise you would pay tax.
All this is on the HMRC website. You can report his anonymously to the NMW helpline.
Also, you have to have written terms and conditions of employment within 8 weeks of starting. If not, you can take him to an Employmetn Tribunal. You can get fired for any reason within 12 mths of starting, after that your employer has to go through a formal procedure. See the ACAS website.
Are Students Exempt From Income Tax & National Insurance If They Work?
Question by SazzyC | Posted in United Kingdom
I'm a student wanting to work weekends for minimum wage, and was wandering if income tax and national insurance will still be deducted from my pay?..I only want to work up to 18hrs. Thanks.
Answer: Can I correct some misconceptions on here? Students are NOT exempt from tax in the UK. But all UK citizens are entitled to a tax-free personal allowance of £6475. The tax year goes from 6th April to 5th April, so if you start work soon, you will have a backlog of unused allowance. Both tax and NI are based on amount of earnings, not hours worked. But whereas tax is calculated on a cumulative basis for the year, NI is on each payday in isolation. You can earn £110 a week before NI is deducted.
Form P38S is relevant for students working in vacations only, and then only if earnings will be below £6475 a year. Not for someone like yourself who is planning to work throughout the year, albeit
