Can I Claim National Insurance Back After A Summer Job? |
Question by Portnoyisagod | Posted in United Kingdom
I worked over the summer and earned around £3000 and am now a full time student. I'm below the Income Tax threshold (£6475) so I know I can claim that back. However I don't know if I can claim back National Insurance, as I'm above the £110 weekly earnings threshold.
Does anyone know if I can? It doesn't mention NI anywhere on the P50 or P45 forms which I'm using to claim Income tax back.
Answer: The reason it doesn't mention NIC on those forms is that it's non-refundable, and you can't claim it back.
Tax for a year is calculated on a cumulative basis. NIC is deducted according to each payday in isolation, irrespective of other earnings in the year. All you would ever be able to claim back would be anything employer over-deducted. For example, if NI was deducted from someone of over 60. Over 60s don't have to pay NI. It is rare for an employer to deduct an incorrect amount of NIC, or over-deduct. |

How Much Allowance Is National Insurance Contribution Allowance? |
Question by KimphiJabbawockeez | Posted in United Kingdom
I got made redundant recentley from woolworths, and have been advised to sign on now that i am,i have been told i can only claim national insurance contribution allowance but nobody will tell me if/or how much i will be receiving! the first time i visited the jobcentre to sign on i didn`t get a payment!! can somebody please help me?
Answer: Are you thinking of the credit you get put towards your benefits? If that is the case, you don't get any money in your pocket, but your National Insurance record is guarded against any shortfall of contributions for your state pension, etc.

Do You Pay National Insurance Contirbutions Whilst Claiming Incpacity Benefit? |
Question by bendi1 | Posted in Insurance
My cousin has recently came off incapacity benefit after a severe spinal injury due to a car accident some time ago, they are now keen to return to work, in the mean time when looking for work they have put in a claim for job seekers allowance but have been told they are not entitled so therefore only have their partners wage to live on until work is found. Are no national insurance contributions made when on ib?
Answer: Yes, contributions are paid but as stated towards your pension. You must have paid employee contributions.
Because if you think about it, people on a benefit such as job seekers, if it worked that way, they would be paying contributions and keep claiming contribution based JSA forever without ever going onto the means-tested income based JSA.
Unfortunately, it is not just means-tested by savings and indeed if you have zero savings but a partner that earns a reasonable income, you will not be entitled to benefit. |

Answer: If you're leaving the UK you must tell HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). Your Tax Office will give you form P85 Leaving the United Kingdom to get any tax refund you're owed and work out if you'll become non-resident. If you still need to complete a tax return after you leave they'll let you know.
P85 form: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/cnr/p85.pdf
