Can A Dependent Full Time College Student Be Sued For Medical Bills In Their Name, Under Their Moms Insurance?
Question by pokervon | Posted in Law & Ethics
I am a 19 year old full time college student, i had to have surgery (along with all the medical bills that come along with it) i am a dependant and under my mothers insurance. All the money that I earn goes into college.
Answer: Yes!
You are the insured member under your mother certificate of insurance (group or individual), when you had the surgery, it was your surgery, not your mothers or the insurance companies, you are responsible for the loss that you incurred.
The hospital can file a civil complaint against you in order to recover the monies owed from your covered loss.
Write the hospital a Hardship Letter, letting them know that you have limited means in order to repay the debit, and work with the hospital to negotiate down the claim, and make a payment arrangement.

Answer: I'm in a similar situation. I have a good job but the company I work for is so small my boss can't offer insurance. My hubby is a full time college student on the GI bill and also does not have insurance. After I interviewed with a handful of insurance brokers I finally had one tell me that all of the individual maternity insurance plans are crap. He suggested that I go ahead and get pregnant and then get on Medicaid. I make a little bit too much money to qualify right now but they have to take uninsured pregnant women.
Just to give you an idea, the cheapest maternity coverage I found would cost me at a very minimum $8,200 to have a baby. And that's if I get pregnant the first
