How Can I Find Liability Insurance For A Building Contractor?

I'm looking for liability insurance for a contractor who specializes in home remodeling for people with dissabilities?

Answer: Most small contractors are stuck with the "surplus lines" market these days. The insurance industry is terrified of construction defects claims and mold claims, so the garden variety insurers have shut off small contractors.

Tradesmen are another story. Electricians, plumbers, and other "specialists" are still welcome in the standard market.

How Do I Get On Approved Insurance Company Building Contractor Lists ?

i have just started my own building company after working for my fathers company for 22 years and thought this would be a good way of getting work

Answer: Write to the individual insurance companies - like Legal & General, Norwich Union etc etc. Mark your letter for the attention of the Underwriters/Risk Assessment Department and advise them that you would like to know how to get on their panel for insurance work.

Also, try approaching local property maintenance companies, estate agents and letting agents - they need people to carry out routine work for their landlords.

Any Ideas On How I Can Register My Building Company As A Prefered Contractor To Insurance Companies?

im trying to register my uk building company with insurance companies to carry out there repair claims, but am not sure how to go about contacting anybody or what the procedures are?
I have all the criteria needed insurance polices, fmb+constructionline registered. financially stable. And trading for over thirty years.
I just need a foot in the door but don't know how?

Answer: As all good things said, try the direct approach.

However it may be worth trying other places too. For example, I've been suffering building problems recently, and Zurich passed the work to Cunningham Lindsay to project manage, and Morgan Ashurst did the actual building and decorating work. Both these firms have national coverage; they probably get a guaranteed flow of work from the insurers in return for a favourable hourly rate.
So could be it is guys like this you need to identify and work with as well. As they might be the ones who really control who does the insurance jobs!

Good luck!

Verifying Building License And Insurance Of A Contractor?

For a building contractor
a) Which "State Agency" do I contact to verify the "Building License or Permits" of a contractor
b) How do I find out of his insurance company?

A roofer did my roof 5 months ago. Messed up somewhere and it leaked water that developed mold all over. My city's building department says the roofer is not licensed in my city.

How do I find out if he himself or his company are licensed in the state, and of his insurance

Answer: If a contractor can't or won't show you his license and insurance certificate, hire a different contractor. That is the first thing you should ask and the first thing he should do for you. If he can't do that, what else can't he do?

What If I Finished My Basement Without Getting Permits? I Used Quality Contractors. How Can I Get Insurance?

Home already insured, but I added basement without getting permits. It is professionally done by many of the same contractors who built my house originally. If I changed insurance companies now, had them do a wlk through, and my house burns down later. Will the new insurance company ask to see permits and/or original plans to my house in order to decide what they will pay for? Net/Net: What can I do now to make sure my house is insured fully, besides tearing down my basement drywall for inspection?

Answer: OK, a couple of things. The permit bit is irrelevant - insurance companies don't care. You can just call your agent, and tell them, hey, I finished my basement now, so the cost to finish it was XYZ dollars, I need to increase the coverage on my homeowners policy. That shouldn't be a problem.

They might see plans, but you didn't actually add any space to the house - you only improved space that was already there. So it REALLY shouldn't matter.

They will decide to pay, based on the cost to repair - or your policy limit, whichever is LESS.

To make sure your house is insured fully, have a sitdown with your agent, and ask them to re-do a residential
