Question by Joe Hayden | Posted in Health & Safety
At the moment when you hit over 50 insurance premiums can double. Can you think of a better way for insurance companies to assess risk?
E.g. Previous Insurance Claims, Lifestyle ( I.e. Gym Membership), Pre-Existing Medical Conditions
or anything else you can think of.
Cheers
Answer: The insurance companies don't only charge premiums when you reach 50 years of age. Many will either not offer insurance to those who have pre-existing medical conditions that put them at a higher risk than other travellers, or they will charge them a significant amount for insurance. Similarly, travel insurance costs increase depending on the country being visited (high risk countries where something is more likely to go wrong) and the activities being undertaken on a trip. For example, a winter sports trip, which puts a traveller at much greater risk of injury (or possibly even death) will cost an awful lot more.
I'm not sure that penalising those who have claimed in the past

I have bought travel insurance perhaps 50 times over the last 20 or so years, the first time I ever had to make a legitimate claim, within the policy, I had to fight tooth and nail with the insurance company and eventualy gave up.

So back in September 09' I rear-ended someone. I was cited for it. The insurance company paid $12,107.22 on my $18,215 car (value from KBB). I requested. in writing, that the vehicle be considered a total loss. The insurance company was replacing my engine with a used engine. I have had a car with a replaced engine once before, and it was nothing but problems. The insurance company pushed for repair, so I had it repaired. Since then it has been in 4 times for a mysterious check engine light (3rd

The insurance company has the duty to return your car to you in the same condition it was in before the accident. I hope you can document all of the problems you have had since the accident.

Answer: Without looking into it in detail, it sounds like just a bog standard travel insurance policy. If you already have good travel cover no you don't need it.
Whilst no doubt it's a perfectly good product, it probably doesn't offer anything extra over what you already have
However I'd suggest that you double check your current policy to be sure that it covers everything you are concerned about.
I went on holiday to the Dominican republic 5 weeks ago but whilst over there I was admitted to hospital over night. I've been back 3 weeks and this morning the bill from the Dominican hospital has arrived and they want me to pay 415.00 english pounds in the next 15 days of which i'm not able to as I don't work and I can't get legal aid for.
I had travel insurance with Atlas direct and they told me they were going to pay but now they won't pay out and are refusing to answer my calls and emails.
Answer: Pass the letter to your insurance company, it's in their hands. What can the Dominican Republic do anyway that you are now back in Britain.....sod all.

We always take out a seniors travel insurance policy before we leave from MyCover travel insurance. Seniors Travel Insurance takes the worry out of travel. They have emergency medical assistance provided by the insurer, Allianz, which is a reputable company with worldwide resources, should you need it. We take some risks, but not too many as you never know what can happen and what assistance you may need in these places. We get some criticism from our family as we are not concerned about the conditions in some of the locations we have visited and prefer to get off the beaten track a bit and away from the usual tourist locations....

One of the cuts was a two-year delay in the plan to let people 50 and over with less than $500000 in super keep paying in up to $50000 a year - halving almost overnight their allowable contributions. I have very little faith now it will ever see the
