Do UK residents need travel insurance when travelling in the EU ...

Elsewhere in the EU a lot more doctors than in the UK only treat private patients. Your NHS EHIC gives you cover for medical costs in the EU, to the same extent that the particular EU national scheme covers its citizens but it’s not always easy to find or get to a doctor who operates within the health service of another country. Travel insurance covers lots of things, such as lost or stolen belongings incuding money & passport. So – no, you don’t NEED travel insurance, but can you afford to pay for everything yourself if something goes wrong. Plus in some of the other EU countries the patient has to pay part of the cost anyway, and often emergency dental treatrment is not covered by the local health service.
