| Answer: I've had a number of credit cards with the rental car coverage. Not a single one exculded Erie. Virtually all of them excluded Ulster, however, for what should be obvious reasons. The level of violence in Ulster has subsided somewhat from its historic levels. If this continues then maybe the credit card insurance companies will change their policies and start offering coverage there. |

Rental Car Insurance In Ireland? |

I have been told that most credit card don't carry coverage in Ireland and unlike most countries you go to, you HAVE to buy THEIR insurance. Please let me know if this is true and is it the best decision to get just liability while I'm there. Thanks.
Answer: I can't, nor can anyone else here, speak for your credit card's policies. Call them and ask.
I can tell you that your auto policy from the USA won't cover a car in another country though.
Don't just get liability coverage, get collision and comprehensive coverage too--unless you don't mind paying for the damage to the rental car. Total it and you could be looking at a $25,000 bill. That'd make the insurance look pretty affordable. |

Most Credit Card Companies In The US Exclude Car Rental Insurance Coverage In Ireland. Why? |

| Answer: Credit card companies require that you decline any coverage offered by car rental companies in order for the credit card company to cover you. By Irish law, car rental companies are required to provide (and charge) you for certain types of coverage. For example, you cannot decline Third Party Liability coverage when renting a car. Also, when an Irish rental company quotes you a price, the price must include collision and theft insurance. If you do not want these last two coverages, you must explicitly decline the coverage. These requirements are different than most other European countries. |

What Insurance Is Needed For Rental Car In California? |

My son leaves Ireland tomorrow Sat 17th Nov to fly to San Diego. He has rented a car to drive to Seattle - everything appears to be arranged. But I want to check he has adequate car insurance that is needed/required? He is over 25 years and has normal Travel Insurance.
Answer: Many credit card companies will cover insurance requirements if you use their credit card to rent the car. However, your son should have checked with his credit card carrier before he left. Once he gets to the counter in the U.S. it will not be practical to check. And since he's already left Ireland (since today is Sunday 11/18) that probably won't be helpful information for your son. However, manybe someone else reading this will be helped by this information.
Once your son is here he'll be pressured to sign up for every bit of insurance he can buy, whether he needs it or not. Rental car companies make tons of money this way. |
