Why Is The Cost Of Motor Insurance In Northern Ireland Twice Approx What It Would Be In The Rest Of The UK?

Answer: Insurers base their premiums on the volume of claims they get from within each postal area. It would not be fair for example to charge someone in a rural area where there is no traffic the same price as someone living in a busy city centre as with more traffic and crime about, the person in the city centre would be more likely to claim than the person in the rural area.

Motor Insurance? Considering Ireland Is In The EU, Can I Get My Insurance With An English Motor Insurer?

I'm sick paying over the odds in Ireland for motor insurance. Can i get cover from an English or northern Ireland motor insurer that will cover me in the Rep of Ireland considering the free movement of goods and services within the EU

Answer: Sort of but sorry.... no

Insurers in the EU can do business in any other member state under the 'passporting' rules in the EU 3rd Insurance directive (subject to rubber stamp approval). So from that perspective there is free movement and yes legally you could buy insurance from say Commercial Union in London (or Belfast for that matter as in this context NI and England are the same)

However, you'd still need to buy a policy that covers you in the ROI you can't just buy a UK policy. As much as anything else taxes, levies (for uninsured drivers etc) are different in each country.

Don't forget nearly all the companies who sell car insurance in the UK

To People Of Northern Ireland How Do You Insure Your Motor Vehicles?

To people of Northern Ireland, how do you insure your motor vehicles? Every time an insurance ad comes on TV it always says 'not available in Northern Ireland'

Answer: The cheap policies are not available in the UK, but many of the larger insurers, and some smaller ones are there, but the typical premium is higher than elsewhere in the UK.

The reason is nothing to do with riots, or the troubles.
It is actually because the court system is different from the rest of the UK, and has historically awarded higher injury compensation to accident victims, hence the cost of injury claims on motor insurance is higher. There have recently been moves to align the court system more closely with the rest of the UK, so the difference in premiums should start to reduce.

i am on my mothers insurance. number 4 on the policy states

persons, or classes of persons, whose liability is covered
a) the insured (being my mother)
b) the person named in 6 b) below

5. vehicles, or classes of vehicles, the use of which is covered.
a) the vehicle bearing the registration number .....

Answer: Good luck on this one,...

Read it very carefully..

Usually on fully comp you are only covered for 3rd party on other peoples cars.
That is why you need their permission to drive the car.

From what you have above it does seem as if you can drive other peoples cars but it is not clear about the level of cover.

The easiest thing to do is to get your mother to call them and ask.....
